Our Process

Our Process

Catch basin repair and replacement restores stormwater collection where a frame has settled, masonry has failed, the sump is damaged, a lead is blocked or broken, or surrounding pavement has collapsed. Harrowgate diagnoses the drainage defect and self-performs the structure, pipe, granular, concrete, and paving work in Toronto and the GTA.A sunken grate can be an adjustment problem, but it can also indicate failed risers, leaking joints, washed-out bedding, a fractured outlet, or poor compaction around the structure.

FAQ

Catch Basin Repair and Replacement FAQ

Should a settled catch basin be adjusted or completely replaced?

An adjustment is suitable when the barrel, base, pipe connection, and surrounding support remain sound and only the frame elevation or upper risers have failed. Full replacement is required for cracked or displaced sections, failed bases, severe leakage, unsuitable geometry, or broken connections. Harrowgate inspects below the frame before defining the repair.

Why does pavement keep sinking around a catch basin?

Recurring settlement usually comes from poorly compacted backfill, water entering through joints or pipe openings, a leaking lead, or a rocking frame that breaks the pavement edge. Adding asphalt treats only the surface. We remove the failed zone, seal the structure, restore the granular envelope in tested lifts, and rebuild the pavement section.

Can a catch basin be repaired without replacing the storm lead?

Yes, when flushing or camera inspection shows that the lead is open, correctly graded, and structurally sound. Harrowgate can rebuild the basin and reconnect to the retained pipe with an approved connector. A fractured, offset, root-filled, or reverse-graded lead is included in the excavation so the repaired inlet can discharge properly.

How do you set the final catch basin grate elevation?

We use survey control tied to the approved pavement grade, curb and gutter profile, crossfall, and planned paving lifts. The frame is checked during adjustment, base paving, and surface paving. Final water testing confirms that runoff reaches the grate and that the frame does not create a bump, depression, or unsafe wheel path.

What standards apply to catch basin replacement in Toronto?

Work commonly references OPSS 407 for new installations, OPSS 408 for adjustment and rebuilding, the applicable OPSD catch-basin drawing, CSA A257 precast requirements, CAN/CSA-B70.1 for frames and covers, and City of Toronto TS 407 amendments where municipal infrastructure is involved. Project documents determine the exact editions and details.

How long is a commercial catch basin area closed?

A simple upper rebuild may be completed within a short planned closure, while full replacement with lead repair, concrete collar, and multi-lift paving requires more time and cure coordination. Harrowgate sequences excavation, inspection, backfill, concrete, and asphalt so loading does not occur before the structure and pavement can carry site traffic.

Do you clean the catch basin after construction?

Yes. We remove excavation debris, mortar, granular, and sediment from the sump and confirm that the outlet is clear. Where site grading or landscaping continues, inlet protection remains in place and is maintained without blocking emergency drainage. A final cleanout and flow check are completed before the drainage system is handed back.
